Henry Ford founded the company in 1903, with the dream of building a car for the masses. And that’s exactly what he did. Beginning with 1903′s Model A, the Michigan-based company gradually rolled out a lineup of vehicles that were priced right for the consumer. Perhaps the best-known early Ford model is the immortal Model T, which was bought by 16.5 million Americans, and was affordable enough for Ford’s own factory workers. What made Fords even more affordable was the introduction of the moving assembly line, a cost-effective method of production that became a mainstay of automobile manufacturing.

The postwar era saw the introduction of the legendary Thunderbird. Offering performance wedded to luxury features like power windows, the car was a huge hit. By the mid-1960s, the automaker launched the sporty Ford Mustang, adored for its low price, powerful V8 engine and sleek styling. The Mustang even created a brand-new vehicle category: the pony car.

With a new mindset of global competitiveness, Ford unveiled its popular Escort and Taurus models, and rode a wave of popularity in the 1990s, thanks in part to the success of its Explorer midsize SUV.

A company that began with as little as 28 thousand dollars in 1903, now generates an income that is easily in the billions. Famous Fords include the Model T, the Ford Mustang and the Ford Thunderbird. Today, Ford continues to manufacture both cars and trucks, and has added several hybrid vehicles that offer safer environmental alternatives.
